Rainbow Dace

For the first time this season, we have Rainbow Dace available.

live Rainbow Dace fish

Also known as the Red Shiner or Red-horse Minnow, Rainbow Dace are native to central North America west of the Mississippi River.

Maximum size is only about 3.5 inches, but they pack plenty of color to make up for it. With a mix of blue and purple on the sides combined with red fins, these fish are sure to delight.

Dace are winter hardy, and completely compatible with all Koi and Goldfish. For more information and pricing, check out the Rainbow Dace product page or our Price List and Availability.

      Hi Tim,

Yes, the Rainbow Dace will eat the same pellet food given to Koi and Goldfish. The smallest pellet size is preferable.

Hi Casey, is there a date too late to introduce these fish to an outdoor pond (Maryland, Zone 7) for overwintering? We have had a couple of 33/34 degree nights, with a 32 or below night probably within the month.

    Hi David,

Dace are winter hardy and can withstand cold temperatures. So, provided that they are acclimate properly, I would not think that you would have a problem adding them to your pond. Good luck!

  4. Casey LeFever says:

Pleco, no, they will not eat Rainbow Dace. However large koi will eat them if they are able to get the dace into their mouth.

Winter hardy, but can they survive under ice? Located in northern Wisconsin; Goldfish have been fine.

  6. Anonymous says:

can they live in a heated aquarium at 24 degrees centigrade ? as can white cloud mountain minnows, goldfish and palaty variatus.

  7. peter platy says:

can rainbow dace live in a heated aquarium as can other subtropicals such as goldfish, white cloud mountain monnows and platy variatus ?

Here’s a good question that i have not found while researching smart guy mr. anonymous. Do these need to breed using clams, or mussels, as do some, or over a rock pile? There seems to be varying opinions on this. How do you accomplish breeding with these?

  9. LarryM says:

Are Rainbow Dace easy to breed? Can’t seem to find much information on that subject. Can you provide ay links as to where I could find breeding information?
    Thank in advance.

I was thinking about getting some cold water fish and the rainbow dace looked really pretty. What is their approximate price?

  11. chubby guppy says:

The dace might look pretty if you have an underwater window in your pond, but in mine you’re usually looking down on them so they look brown and camouflaged. Still, better than the unnatural dayglow orange of koi.
